Network Storage

Facts and Figures

Switch Intelligence: Devices Get Even Smarter

By 2007, intelligent switches will host many storage applications, including virtualization, data movement, provisioning and security. They'll eliminate the need for special-purpose storage appliances in those areas, even as special-purpose devices emerge for security/encryption, storage-resource management and other applications. Storage-Software Support Services: Say that 10 Times Fast

By 2008, vendors will spend $820 million per year on storage-software support services, building supportability into products, expanding high-end support offerings, providing sales with a service-specific incentive, certifying channel support partners and investigating closer partnerships with other storage vendors. Insurance Industry ‘concerned over data management’

The majority of respondents in a new poll believe that data management poses a problem to the insurance industry.

About nine out of ten (88 per cent) of representatives at an Actuarial Transformation Roundtable suggested that “data management issues currently impact the ability to provide reliable, valid financial data”

Organised by the Insurance and Actuarial Advisory Services (IAAS) practice of analyst Ernst and Young, members of the roundtable also raised concerns over having no data governance team in place (56 per cent) or over having no formal data management program (67 per cent).

SteveGoren, roundtable moderator and leader of the Ernst and Young IAAS Actuarial Transformation practice, said “It is crucial to get everyone to acknowledge data govern and quality as key corporate priorities and reflect this in their operating practices and processes”.

“Recognising that old problems will only multiply over time, insurers must clean up existing data and change their processes going forward”.

73 per cent of respondents also felt that the quality of their data requires improvement, with about 50 per cent admitting that their team spends between three and five days a month correcting data quality issues.

Demand for data management “set to boom”

The demand for data management among life sciences companies is set to soar, according to the latest research.

A survey by Frost and Sullivan entitled Data Integration in Life Science Companies found that the need for effective tools for storing and viewing data is to increase.

It states that data integration is likely to be the next phase in the growth of data management solutions for life sciences companies.

A Frost and Sullivan spokesperson commented: “The global markets for varied data quality tools are not clearly delineated or disjointed from the market for data integration tools”.

“Solution providers in the data integration market cannot ignore the importance of data quality as the first stage in their integration project lifecycle”.

The analyst continued that the need for data integration and management “is certain” and that this will affect the majority of life sciences and pharmaceutical firms.

Meanwhile, a roundtable of insurance executives organised by Ernst and Young also recently found that data management issues are likely to pose a problem for the industry in the near future.
